High-end computing, communication, data, networking, and visualization resources are increasingly integral to the solution of critical scientific and engineering problems. The need for these resources is driven by the depth and breadth of the questions to be tackled, the increasing granularity of computational models, and by the expanding quantity of data that must be mined, analyzed, visualized, and understood.

NCSA's Persistent Infrastructure Directorate has long provided forefront cyber-resources to the nation's scientists and engineers. Now the center will expand this role as it defines the supercomputing center of the 21st century by engaging scientific and engineering communities to acquire computing systems and design usage models that effectively and efficiently deliver cyber-resources to their communities.
