Network Engineer

Advanced Digital Services/Storage Enabling Technologies

Overview

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has two Network Engineer positions available in our ADS Directorate, under our SET Group. These positions are responsible for the design, maintenance, and operation of NCSA's high-performance research network in support of NCSA staff, HPC resources, researchers, educational and private sector partners, and NSF-funded projects awarded to NCSA.

The NCSA network is a multi-site, multi-vendor environment that leverages Ethernet, DWDM, and other transports to interconnect its IP network with the world over various dedicated WAN links that span the scientific computing community. The network evolves continually, incorporating cutting-edge technologies to further research, as well as supporting research into new networking technologies. Consequently, this position requires not only skills in many areas of networking, but also the ability to diagnose complex interaction problems between these components.

The Network Engineer is engaged with all aspects of network operations, from making network cables to configuring eBGP peerings with other research institutions. In addition to the installation and configuration of equipment, the Network Engineer provides valuable feedback into the design and direction of the network.

Required Education, Training and Experience

  • BA/BS degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field required. Alternative degree fields may be accepted if accompanied by an equivalent amount of relevant experience.
  • Relevant experience configuring and operating switched Ethernet and routed IP networks
  • Familiarity with Unix shell and Unix troubleshooting/network utilities

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience with various network hardware platforms (e.g. Juniper, Cisco, Extreme)
  • Experience with many operating systems (e.g. BSD, Linux, OS X, and Microsoft Windows)
  • Experience with hardware firewalls and security services (e.g. VPN)
  • Experience with Unix-based network services administration (e.g. DNS, DHCP)
  • Knowledge of optical Ethernet technology (e.g. single- and multi-mode fiber, transceiver types, DWDM)
  • Familiarity with server hardware and operating system administration
  • Familiarity with various programming and/or scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Java, Python)

These are regular academic professional positions at NCSA and are annually renewable, 12/12, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
