Visiting Research Programmer
Cyberenvironments and Technologies Directorate
Overview
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one or more Visiting Research Programmer positions available in our Cyberenvironments and Technologies Directorate. The primary responsibility of this position is to build cyber infrastructures to support research and engineering communities. This position will research, design and develop software to create cyber-infrastructures to support and automate data acquisition, analytics, conversion and visualizations for scientific and engineering research communities. Incumbent(s) must be able to research, understand and articulate the strengths/weaknesses of different approaches in order to achieve a consensus with the development team and community members toward building an appropriate solution. The incumbent(s) will build tools and systems that leverage semantic web technologies, leverage linked data techniques and are geospatial aware using Web 2.0 approaches. This position also provides research and programming support for existing systems supporting communities in academia, government and industrial settings. The successful candidate(s) will be part of a team but must also work independently to explore new ideas, contribute to publications, design, develop, integrate, debug and deliver reliable software solutions in a timely fashion.
Required Education, Training and Experience
- BA/BS in computer science, engineering or related field required (MS/PhD degrees highly preferred). Alternative degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
- Professional software development experience.
- 2 years programming experience in Java and JavaScript.
Preferred Experience
- Publication authorship and presentation.
- Web 2.0 development experience (HTML 5, JavaScript, GWT, RESTful web services).
- Programming skills in other languages (C/C++, Python).
- Multiple OS experience (Linux, Windows, Apple).
- Experience with HPC environments and cloud computing.
- Ability to interact with people in a wide range of educational, scientific, and engineering disciplines to advance cyber-infrastructure, data curation, computer vision, high performance computing and their applications.
- Ability to foster collaborations with researchers and possess excellent communication skills.
This is a visiting academic professional position (covered by a collective bargaining agreement) at NCSA and is an annually renewable, 12/12, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
