Senior Security Engineer

Overview
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one Senior Security Engineer position available in our Cybersecurity Directorate. Serving as the head of operational security, this position is responsible for the immediate oversight and direction of NCSA's effort to research, design, develop, implement and administer state-of-the-art cybersecurity infrastructure in support of NCSA's objective of providing a highly reliable and functional computing environment. This position leads the effort to identify and investigate cybersecurity incidents across NCSA networks and systems and respond to these events, interdict malicious behavior, mitigate security vulnerabilities, remediate compromised systems and adjust cybersecurity controls as appropriate to ensure similar malicious behavior is prevented in the future. In addition, this position is also responsible for managing and guiding the junior members of the operational security staff in these and similar activities and is also responsible for representing NCSA in the operational cybersecurity community, with a focus on tactical cybersecurity architecture and incident response. Furthermore, NCSA is composed of numerous projects and activities—as each of these projects has specific cybersecurity needs that need to be addressed, it is this position's responsibility to engage with the leadership for those projects and provide security oversight, guidance and support within the means of the available staffing and funding.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in computer science or related field. Alternative baccalaureate degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to current NCSA technologies).
- Proven experience with computer and network security challenges across widely distributed resources and domains.
- Operational experience analyzing computer event logs (e.g. syslog) and operating intrusion detection systems.
- Working understanding of computer networking (e.g. understanding of TCP/IP and UDP protocols and network services to a level required to be able to utilize network logs for security monitoring).
- Two years of management experience and a demonstration of fostering teamwork.
Preferred Experience
- Five or more years work experience in the area of computer security with two or more years work experience in a senior cybersecurity position including cybersecurity architecture design and implementation and incident response.
- Five years experience in project oversight and the leadership of security related projects.
- Working knowledge of security requirements and challenges faced by a high performance computer center.
- Extensive knowledge of intrusion detection technologies.
- Proficient scripting and programming skills.
- Oral presentation skills.
This is a regular academic professional position at NCSA and is an annually renewable, 12/12, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
