Cyberapplications and Communities Directorate
Overview
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one Senior Research Programmer position available in our Data Intensive Technologies and Applications division under the Cyberapplications and Communities Directorate. This position’s efforts focus on research in visual analytics and information design. There are 3 primary objectives in this role: 1) To research and develop new visual metaphors and interactive processes, coupled with data mining approaches, to effectively analyze complex data. For this effort, computational medicine and genomics will be the primary focus area. 2) To develop new techniques and approaches in information design which facilitate multiple levels of communication and decision-making, such as between peer experts, multi-disciplinary partners, and between expert and novice. Topic areas include, but are not limited to, medical decision-making, collaborative science endeavors and public data. 3) To participate in Students Pushing Innovation (SPIN) by recruiting, managing and mentoring students interested in data analysis and representation, and in potentially commercializing novel ideas.
Required Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in fine arts, graphic design or related field. Alternative degree fields will be considered/accepted if accompanied by equivalent experience.
- 10+ years experience in data representation, information design and user interface/experience design.
- Experience in executing multiple techniques for requirements gathering, including user-centered and participatory design approaches.
- Experience in product management including use case development, writing of requirements and functional definition documents, scope management, oversight of the design and implementation process.
- Experience in grant proposal and report writing.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with students as a professor or instructor in higher education.
- Extensive knowledge of visual communications and human-computer interaction.
This is a regular academic professional position at NCSA and is an annually renewable, 12/12, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
