Undergraduate Interns

Institute for Chemistry Literacy through Computational Science, NCSA Cybereducation

Overview:

NCSA's Cybereducation group is hiring undergraduate interns (hourlies) for the remaining 2009 fall semester and/or the 2010 spring semester to work with researchers and educators who are developing educational resources. The work includes developing visualization, information and communication tools, and Web resources.

Approximately $10.00-$12.00/hour, 10-15 hours per week. Rate is commensurate with experience.

The undergraduate students hired should have expertise in chemistry, computer science and other science- or engineering-related fields, and the ability to quickly learn computational modeling, visualization, and simulation tools.

Job Responsibilities:

The students will work with the Cybereducation lead, support staff, researchers, graduate students and other undergraduate students in the Institute for Chemistry Literacy and Computational Science (ICLCS) by assisting rural high school chemistry teachers. Students will help develop materials, such as tutorials, simulations, computer models, and visualizations using computational chemistry tools that will enhance the high school chemistry class. The student will assist staff with creating, maintaining, and disseminating resources and working with educators as they learn to use modeling and visualization tools, and as they integrate these tools into their courses. The student will also learn about and assist educators with using online collaboration and inquiry tools for learning.

  • Assist staff with development and dissemination of computational tools and resources.
  • Work with researchers as they develop simulations, visualizations, and/or curriculum modules that include computational tools and resources.
  • Assist Fellows as they learn to use resources and tools.
  • Support educators through participation in the delivery of lectures, consulting during workshops, and mentoring over the Internet.
  • Support the development of Moodle virtual learning environment.

Required skills:

  • Knowledge of chemistry content and/or computer science programming skills
  • Must have ability to work with SQL and PHP
  • Knowledge of PC and Mac platforms and/or Linux systems
  • Experience in administration of Moodle or Web-based content management systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work with non-technical users via email, online forums, etc.
  • Proficient in English, and good written and oral skills
  • Ability to be a self-starter and self-motivated
  • Programming with Java, CSS, C++, Python a plus
