Overview

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has one Media Communications Coordinator position open in the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE). XSEDE is a single virtual system that scientists can use to interactively share computing resources, data and expertise. People around the world use these resources and services—things like supercomputers, collections of data and new tools—to improve our planet. The Media Communications Coordinator will be responsible for all communications and marketing functions related to the XSEDE project including establishing a communications strategy for the XSEDE project and implementing that strategy, working with both local and national partners.

This person will manage the project’s communications, media relations, web and social media efforts; coordinate events and participation in conferences; and build a positive national and international reputation for the XSEDE project. This will include both creating content and managing other people’s contributions.

Required Education, Training and Experience

  • BA/BS degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field required (advanced degrees preferred). Alternative degree fields will be considered if accompanied by equivalent experience (depending on nature and depth of experience as it relates to current NCSA projects and technologies)
  • Ability to handle multiple projects, deadlines, and stakeholders with minimal supervision
  • Leadership of strategic communications/marketing efforts
  • Experience coordinating communication/marketing for major events
  • Experience with website content development and maintenance, including basic understanding of content management systems
  • Experience with media relations

Preferred Experience

  • At least 3 years’ experience in communications and/or media relations
  • Experience with a university, national lab, or other large non-profit institution
  • Excellent understanding of web technologies and social media; Experience running social media-based communications campaigns

This is a regular academic professional position at NCSA and is a renewable 12-month, 100%-time appointment with regular University benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and start date will be as soon as possible after the close date of the search.
