Oct. 18-20 Fall PRAC Workshop
This workshop provided details about the Blue Waters system and how to prepare applications to take best advantage of IBM's POWER7 multicore chips and the innovative interconnection network linking them. Tools were described and demoed for software development and workflow, performance data collection, debugging, visualization, data movement and storage, application performance simulation, and dynamic load balancing. Additional topics included scientific libraries, advanced programming models, and fault tolerance.

June 23-24 Building the Data Center of the Future Second Biennial Workshop: HPC Data Centers
More than 110 professionals from around the globe involved in building and operating data centers participated in this workshop.

June 22-24 Joint Laboratory for Petascale Computing Workshop
This workshop brought together researchers from INRIA and the University of Illinois to explore challenges related to post-petascale supercomputers and present early results of their joint work. The five main topics were: petascale applications, parallel programming (hybrid, hierarchical, heterogeneous), resilience, numerical algorithms and libraries, and I/O.

June 17 National Petascale Computing Facility Community Day

This invitation-only workshop at the Texas Advanced Computing Center, co-sponsored by Blue Waters and TeraGrid, included sessions on application needs for I/O and data management, filesystems, I/O libraries, and large-scale data management. Presentation slides are available.

March 19-20 Fault Tolerance for Extreme-Scale Computing
This invitation-only workshop, co-sponsored with TeraGrid, focused on fault-tolerance on large systems in order to determine what work is required to run applications on emerging petascale systems without faults causing large numbers of application failures.

Feb. 12-13 Building the Data Center of the Future: Effective Energy-Efficient Design
This free workshop brought together experts from research centers, the IT industry, and engineering, consulting, and architecture firms to explore the challenges involved in planning, designing, engineering, constructing, monitoring, and maintaining the data center of the future.

Oct. 15-17 Pathways to Blue Waters—Communication-Intensive Algorithms and Applications

Aug. 18-22 Virtual School of Computational Science and Engineering summer school: Accelerators for Science and Engineering Applications

June 9 Petascale Summer Workshop
This Las Vegas workshop, co-sponsored by the Blue Waters project and TeraGrid and co-located with the 2008 TeraGrid Conference, attracted about 55 researchers interested in petascale computing.
