NSF's Hartmanis to Speak at U of I

Juris Hartmanis, Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation Directorate of Computer, Information Science and Engineering (CISE) will speak on March 11 at 8 PM at the University of Illinois computer science department in Urbana, Ill.

The lecture entitled "On the Nature of Computer Science," is part of the department's Distinguished Lecture Series. Hartmanis will asses the state of computer science, outline the key computer science programs at the NSF, and discuss the role of the CISE in the NSF-wide Knowledge and Distributed Intelligence (KDI) program.

In addition to his NSF position, Hartmanis is the Walter R. Read professor of engineering at Cornell University. A distinguished researcher in the theory of computing and computational complexity theory, Hartmanis won the Turing Award in 1993. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the ACM, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
