Top 500

LIVERMORE, CA — The United States has unofficially regained the top spot in the supercomputing race. An IBM machine has reportedly overtaken Japan's 35-teraflop Earth Simulator, achieving a sustained performance of 36.01 teraflops in running the Linpack benchmark.

The system tested at IBM's production center in Rochester, Minn. Is a prototype of the Blue Gene/L system to be installed next year at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The 36-teraflop milestone was achieved on a system of 16,250 processors, while the full system to be installed at Lawrence Livermore will be composed of 130,000 processors.

The next official Top 500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers will be released in November.
