McDonnell Douglas joins NCSA Industrial Partners Program

CHAMPAIGN, ILThe National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announced today (Jan. 16) that McDonnell Douglas Corp. has joined the center's Industrial Program.

McDonnell Douglas designs, produces and supports a variety of aerospace and defense products. It is one of the world's largest defense and space contractors and the third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer. In 1995 the corporation had more than $14 billion in revenues; it employs more than 64,600 people worldwide.

"We are excited about adding a leading aerospace company to NCSA's industrial program," said Larry Smarr, NCSA director. "McDonnell Douglas has been a leader in using high-performance computing technology in the development and production of aerospace systems. Their modeling and simulation efforts have been significant in supporting their work in such areas as avionics, launch and space-mission operations and training systems. NCSA will help them apply many of the evolving leading-edge high-performance computing and information technologies to their expanding need to extract more knowledge from their extensive databases in all aspects of their business."

The initial 12-month agreement adds McDonnell Douglas Corp. to a group of 16 industry leading corporations who are partnering with NCSA to help increase U.S. industrial competitiveness. NCSA's other industrial partners are Allstate Insurance Co.; American Airlines; AT&T; Caterpillar Inc.; Dow Chemical Co.; Eastman Kodak Co.; Eli Lilly & Co.; FMC; J.P. Morgan; Motorola Inc.; Phillips Petroleum Co.; Schlumberger; Sears Roebuck and Co.; Shell Oil Co.; Tribune, Co.; and United Technologies.

NCSA, a unit of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is dedicated to advancing leading-edge technologies in information and high-performance computing and communications in academia and industry. The center receives major funding support from the National Science Foundation, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, NASA, NCSA's corporate partners, the state of Illinois, and the University of Illinois.
