CHAMPAIGN, IL The
National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA)
at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign announced today (Jan. 16) that
McDonnell Douglas Corp.
has joined the center's
Industrial

McDonnell Douglas designs, produces and supports a
variety of aerospace and defense products. It is one of the
world's largest defense and space contractors and the
third-largest commercial aircraft manufacturer. In 1995 the
corporation had more than $14 billion in revenues; it
employs more than 64,600 people worldwide.
"We are excited about adding a leading aerospace company
to NCSA's industrial program," said Larry Smarr, NCSA
director. "McDonnell Douglas has been a leader in using
high-performance computing technology in the development and
production of aerospace systems. Their modeling and
simulation efforts have been significant in supporting their
work in such areas as avionics, launch and space-mission
operations and training systems. NCSA will help them apply
many of the evolving leading-edge high-performance computing
and information technologies to their expanding need to
extract more knowledge from their extensive databases in all
aspects of their business."
"McDonnell Douglas is pleased about the opportunities
that membership in the highly successful NCSA Industrial
Program will bring," said Allen Atkins, vice president of
product application technologies for McDonnell Douglas. We
believe the combination of leading-edge computational
techniques provided by NCSA and the diverse experience of
our other Industrial Partners will result in a unique
synergism."
"We look forward to developing innovative and effective
solutions for many difficult problems in our business
through teaming with NCSA and our other Industrial
Partners," Atkins said.
"McDonnell Douglas' commitment to developing
next-generation technologies is impressive and important to
our country's overall competitive effort," said John
Stevenson, NCSA corporate officer and head of the Industrial
Program. "They bring an outstanding team of researchers to
our program. There is a great deal of commonality in our
needs and future directions."
