Illinois researchers discuss value of NCSA collaboration

Founding NCSA director Smarr reminisces

NCSA's founding director, Larry Smarr, who now leads the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), spoke via a live video feed at a 25th anniversary celebration on March 2. Reminiscing about the spirit of exploration and innovation that NCSA embodied from its earliest days Smarr said, "I guess nobody said we couldn't do it...We were allowed to dream."

The NeuroMaker: When science meets design

Johann Rischau, an Illinois graduate student in industrial design, worked with NCSA software developer Robert E. McGrath to create the NeuroMaker, which translates an individual's brainwaves into a unique pattern engraved on an object.

Visualizations show Hurricane Katrina gaining power

Data-driven visualizations of 2005's devastating Hurricane Katrina that were created by the Advanced Visualization Laboratory at NCSA are currently being shown at dome festivals in the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Portugal.
