- Alliance-enabled Capability Computing
- The Alliance has defined what constitutes a capability computing project.
Learn the parameters and see if your project should be considered as a
"hero simulation." An outstanding example of capability computing and resources for
more information are included.
§
- Building the Grid
- Advanced network-based applications require services not provided by today’s Internet and Web. To
support these new applications, a grid is needed that integrates new types of resource into the
network fabric and provides enhanced "middleware" services such as quality of service within the fabric itself.
Read Ian Foster's recently released
draft position paper on building the grid. Foster is a member of the Alliance Distributed Computing team.
§
- NSF Grants Database
- Community of Science (COS) is a collaborative network of scientists and their
institutions striving to accelerate science and promote the visibility and funding
of scientific research. Their database, updated weekly, can help you determine
which projects are being funded by NSF in areas of science and engineering that
interest you. Other databases are available on the COS site.
§
- Attend a Chautauqua in Your Region
- Alliance Chautauquas 99 are workshops featuring lectures, hands-on demonstrations, and
special events designed to introduce new audiences to the technologies and applications of the
emerging National Technology Grid. The University of Kentucky, University of New Mexico, and Boston
University are your hosts for Chautauqua 99 events. Check out the agendas and make your plans to attend!
§
- CIC User Support Workshop
- If you work at a CIC institution and provide high-performance-computing user support, take note
of this one-day workshop scheduled for July 20 in Minneapolis. Presentation volunteers are solicited.
§
- Multimedia Computing and Networking 2000
- The deadline is just around the corner (July 9) to participate as a presenter to this conference, to be held
in San Jose, CA, in January 2000. Sponsored by SPIE, IS&T, and ACM SIG Multimedia, MMCN00 will
serve as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art research, development, and implementations
of multimedia systems, technologies, and applications.
§
- Using Parallel Numerical Libraries
- A new course offered by the Ohio Supercomputer Center covers the
de facto standards for parallel linear algebra: SCALAPACK (the parallel successor to LAPACK)
and PBLAS (the parallel successor to BLAS). David Ennis recently taught this course live but
interested readers can also benefit from the online materials.
§
- MHPCC Helps Design America's Cup Entry
- Advanced computational fluid dynamics -- usually applied in aircraft testing -- are being applied
to the keel, rudder, and sail of a yacht whose design was optimized for operations in the
waters off Auckland, New Zealand, where the America's Cup race will be held this year. The Maui High
Performance Computing Center, a PACS Advanced Computational Resources site, recently launched an effort
to actively market some of the center's resources as a relatively inexpensive alternative to
buying high-end hardware.
