March 25, 2011
Dear colleagues:
On April 15, 2011 NCSA's Dell Cluster, Abe, will be retired after
nearly 4 years of productive service to the Illinois and TeraGrid
communities. This notice is to inform you of the details surrounding
the final shutdown of Abe. A web page with the latest information is
available at:
NCSA Intel 64 Cluster Abe Retirement
The short notice trade in of Abe is part of a plan that replaces the
aging Abe/Lincoln with the latest in hardware from Dell and NVIDIA for
a new GPU cluster. This required the retirement of Abe to be moved up
from the original July 31, 2011 date. We will do all we can to keep
the impact to your projects as minimal as possible. Further
information about the new GPU cluster will be distributed shortly as
that machine will be available by June 30, 2011.
The options for the TRAC awarded TeraGrid users who utilize only Abe
of the AQS (Abe, Queenbee, Steele) resource and who are not up for
renewal by July 1st, 2011 may move their remaining allocations to
primarily Lonestar (TACC) or Trestles (SDSC). Those who use QueenBee
(LONI) and/or Steele (Purdue) need not move their allocation at this
time. Those who utilize Abe only and their allocation expires after
April 15, but before June 30, 2011 may remain on the QueenBee/Steele
resources of AQS or request transfer to the resources listed above.
Other TeraGrid resources requested will be evaluated on availability
and need.
The options for the TeraGrid Startup awards on the AQS (Abe, Queenbee,
Steele) resource that expire after July 31, 2011 may move their
remaining allocations to Steele (Purdue), Lonestar (TACC), or Trestles
(SDSC). For those awards that expire before July 31, please utilize
Steele or QueenBee if possible. If not, a transfer to one of the other
TeraGrid resources may be requested.
The transfer ratios will follow those presented at
SU Conversion
Calculator.
The batch queues on Abe will be set to drain by 11:59 PM, April 14,
2011. After this time, batch jobs that remain in the queues will not
be executed. User access to the Abe login nodes will be available till
May 15th to allow for data retrieval. Data remaining in the scratch
and projects directories after the 15th will be deleted. Data residing
in NCSA's mass storage environment will be available until August 15,
2011. This data must be moved or you may request a separate non-
computational allocation on the NCSA storage system.
Abe batch queues close: April 15, 2011
Abe login nodes shutdown: May 15, 2011
Access to NCSA MSS ends: August 15, 2011
