Filesystem upgrade

                        Filesystem Upgrade
                          April 17, 2006

On Tuesday, April 18, NCSA will replace many of the existing filesystems on
its SGI Altix system (cobalt) in preparation for an operating system upgrade.
All files will be automatically copied to the new filesystems -except- files
that are in $HOME/scratch-global (/scratch/users/).

The Altix system will be unavailable from 8 AM Tuesday until early Wednesday.
When the system becomes available again, queued jobs will be placed on hold
so you can ensure that any files needed in the old /scratch filesystem are
copied to the new one before the job starts. Once you are sure the job has
all the necessary input files, you can release the job using the command:

   qrls JOB_ID

Files on the old /scratch filesystem will be available at /scratch.old/users
from April 19 until Wednesday, May 3. Starting on April 19, you can copy a
directory from the old scratch filesystem to the new one using the cp
command with the -r option. For example, to copy subdirectory "data" from
the old scratch directory to the new one:

   cp -r /scratch.old/users/$USER/data $HOME/scratch-global
