New Software Stack

New Software Stack on Tungsten Cluster
                     updated: 14 September 2005

The entire Tungsten cluster has been upgraded to a new software stack.

Here are the differences between the old and new software stacks:

                           Old New
                           --- ----
      Linux Kernel 2.4.20-31.9smp 2.4.21-32.0.1.ELsmp
      glibc 2.3.2-27.9 -unchanged-
      Myrinet GM driver 2.0.12 2.0.21
      Lustre 1.2 1.4
      ChampionPro 1.2.0-3 2.1.0-1tgm2
      Intel compiler 8.0 9.0
      PGI PGI 5.2 PGI 6.006

MPICH-GM 1.2.6 built with Intel 8.1 built with Intel 9.0
      VMI 1 2

Your default environment includes all the items in the "New" column
above via the softenv macro @default except the alternate versions
of MPI: MPICH-GM and VMI. (If you need those, use SoftEnv key
+mpich-gm-1.2.6-intel90 for MPICH-GM and
+mpich-vmi-2.1.0-1_dev-intel for VMI-2.)

In general, programs built using the old software stack should run without
problems, however we recommend recompiling your programs with the new
software stack as soon as possible.

Please contact the NCSA Consulting Office via electronic mail at
consult@ncsa.uiuc.edu or by telephone at (217) 244-1144 with any
questions or problems.

NOTE: All pending jobs in the "ppt" queue have been moved to the "normal"
queue and the ppt queue has been removed.

Thanks to all who helped test the new software stack by running jobs in
the "ppt" queue. Any files that were in the scratch directory that was used
by subclusters "tund" or "tune" are now located in /cfs/projects/.users/$USER.
If you need them, please save them to UniTree or copy them to your
scratch directory (~/scratch-global) by Thursday, September 22. On
September 23, all files in directory /cfs/projects/.users will be removed.
