Production Info
-------------------------
Following an extended installation and Friendly User period for the NCSA's Dell
Xeon Cluster, dubbed tungsten, NCSA will be placing a subset of the overall
cluster resource into production mode on April 26, 2004. The Friendly User
period has been very useful in sorting out the issues with setting up and
configuring the environment and a number of the Friendly Users have been quite
successful in bringing their applications up and optimizing them.
NCSA staff have been working to bring the cluster to a production state and we
look forward to the system being a useful addition to the available resources.
While we still have a few remaining issues to sort out, we will be placing
three of the 256 node sub-clusters in production mode on April 26, 2004. It is
important to note that this initial phase of production mode for tungsten will
make use of the gigabit Ethernet interconnect only and not support the Myrinet
interconnect. We are still resolving stability issues with the Myrinet
interconnect and will bring support for it into the production environment when
these issues have been resolved.
In order to have access beyond April 25, 2004, those with current Friendly User
projects will need to either have a peer-reviewed allocation or request a
Development Allocation project on the systems. For information on getting
allocations see:
http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/UserInfo/Allocations/Overview.html
Access to the tungsten cluster will be discontinued at 12:00am April 26, 2004.
At that point in time the system will have all final preparations to move into
production mode including the removal of all Friendly User account and the
establishments of all account associated with project for production mode. The
system will again become available before the end of the day on April 26.
