Lu proposes to develop a multiscale computational framework for studying the organization of bacterial communities. The framework will be developed by first constructing a parallel computing platform that integrates multiple spatial and temporal cellular processes and then applying the platform to decode the social interaction-community structure relationship. The work will offer a quantitative modeling platform that will advance our fundamental understanding of microbial sociology and ecology, deepen our knowledge of disease pathogenesis, and facilitate the development of engineered microbial consortia for synthetic biology applications.
