At the Interface of Chemistry and Mechanics: Multiscale Modeling of Crack Dynamics in a New Class of Self-Healing Materials

The project focuses on constructing a hierarchical multi-scale computational framework for modeling crack propagation in a material with autonomous self-healing capability under time dependent loading. A new physics model for the material will be integrated into a molecular dynamics code to derive a separation law, and the separation law will then be added to a finite element model for fracture propagation. The work is aligned with the National Materials Genome Initiative.
