From Algorithmic Awareness to Algorithmic Action

Karrie Karahalios

College: Engineering
Award year: 2015-2016

Karahalios and Hamilton are interested in questions about algorithmic awareness, and how people can understand, trust, and interact with the algorithms that now govern everyday life. They plan to study human and machine co-curation of news feeds, developing new software that uses visualization to help diagnose the user's intent with respect to ideal feed curation, and to simultaneously research the user's perception of the algorithms actions. Outcomes will be understanding the awareness of a general population about social network algorithms, how behavior changes when the users interact with the social feed visualization tool, and understanding how to communicate more about the algorithmic processes in the design of tools.
