Learning Next-Generation Aerosol Models for Global Climate Simulation

West and Riemer propose to use a new type of aerosol model, a stochastic, particle-resolved approach, to accurate resolve aerosol processes, benchmark existing global simulations and, for the first time, use machine learning to derive improved coarse-grained aerosol models for global climate simulations. The project will advance the development of two thematic areas at NCSA: 1) Computing and Data via research on scalable machine learning on large data sets, and 2) Earth and Environment via applications to climate modeling and atmospheric aerosol research.
