Predictive Modeling for Impact Assessment

Jana Diesner

College: Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences
Award year: 2015-2016

This project seeks to develop a collaboration between the Graduate School of Library and Information Science and NCSA around computational impact assessment of information products. The motivation for the work is to understand the impact of funded projects and scholarly work. The work would have implications as funders, universities, and review bodies conduct data-driven assessment with impact factors going beyond citation counts. Diesner has a tool (ConText) that uses social networks to calculate impact assessment of issue-focused media. In this project she aims to develop text-mining solutions that accurately and efficiently predict category sets that are relevant for the social sciences and digital humanities by combining evidence from interaction/network data and language use data.
