Genomics Group

NCSA Genomics is looking for a student working on a Master's degree in Computer Science or Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois to collaborate on software development and support for biomedical partners of NCSA. The hourly appointment will be for 20 hours per week and will pay $18 per hour.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop unit tests for codes in Python, C/C++, or other languages as required by partners.
  • Set up, configure and run continuous integration frameworks for ongoing projects.
  • Run functional tests of software, verifying correctness of result after code modifications.
  • Contribute new modules to existing codes, under the supervision and in collaboration with senior members of NCSA Genomics, in response to partner requirements and as needed.
  • Produce and maintain documentation for codes under current development in the group.
  • Maintain open source software repositories, respond to user bug reports, provide documentation and support for users.
  • Install, debug and maintain external software packages on NCSA supercomputer infrastructure, upon requests by partners.
  • Safeguard NCSA, industrial, vendor, product, and operational information, while maintaining data security and confidentiality applicable to NCSA and university legal requirements.
  • Comply with non-disclosure agreements within the group.
  • Analyze and summarize findings and progress on projects using reports, proposals and slide presentations, contribute material to manuscript and grant preparation.
  • Participate in regular conference calls, agile standups and meetings with partners and internally with the Genomics team members, by presenting progress reports and addressing ongoing questions and concerns.

Required education and experience

  • BS degree in CS, ECE, Engineering or related field.
  • Excellent knowledge of Python, C/C++, Linux, and agile practices.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, professional presentation.
  • Very high level of maturity, a person we can rely upon in a fast-paced production environment.

Preferred experience

  • Proficiency in Java, R, Jupyter notebooks, cloud environment, containerization technologies.
  • Familiarity with high performance computing cluster environments.
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning techniques, especially image analysis and classification.
