Data Science in Applied Microeconomics

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a leading center for advanced data-intensive computing and is located at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. In collaboration with the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, Department of Economics, the College of Business, NCSA is developing a strong program in Data Science in Applied Microeconomics through faculty-led research teams. A number of ongoing collaborations utilize NCSA technologies/expertise to advance research in environmental and energy economics, health economics, development economics, econometrics and machine learning, and finance. Data agreements and active research partnerships include Zillow, Uber, Corelogic, Mastercard, the NBER, and the NIH.

Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Peter Christensen, we are excited to offer a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship that focuses on Data Science in Applied Microeconomics. The 12/12, 100% postdoctoral researcher appointment will last for up to two years. Areas of interest can include:

  • Computationally intensive work in any field of applied microeconomic research
  • Machine learning and causal inference in applied econometrics
  • Web- or platform-based field experiments
  • Real-time or streaming policy evaluation
  • Policy prediction problems

The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of a strong and independent research program that will be enhanced through engagement with NCSA technologies and expertise.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out a program of independent, high quality research that leverages the NCSA’s existing program in economics-computer science program, advanced cyberinfrastructure capabilities, and economics expertise in the departments of Agricultural and Consumer Economics, Department of Economics, and College of Business
  • In collaboration with economics faculty at NCSA and related campus units, lead the development of peer-reviewed research outputs
  • Collaborate with NCSA Industry program as appropriate
  • Give presentations at professional economics meetings
  • Participate in the development of grant proposals

Application Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning December 15, 2017 with a first round of interviews taking place at the ASSA meetings in Philadelphia. Applications will be reviewed until the closing date for this position on March 15, 2018.

Salary: $70,000 per year and a $5,000 per year research/travel budget

Start Date: August 16, 2018. (An earlier start date may be possible)
