nanoMFG node at Illinois

The NSF-funded Nanomanufacturing Node of the Network for Computational Nanotechnology seeks undergraduate research assistants with an interest in software development. The nanoMFG node is located at NCSA and includes faculty from MechSE and NCSA staff. Research assistants will work with faculty, staff, and graduate students in nanoMFG. Undergraduate research assistants will:

  • Work for an NSF funded research project centered on manufacturing techniques for various nanotechnology applications.
  • Contribute to public releases of open source software projects.
  • Provide coding technical support for project teams including UI and GUI development testing and debugging for both Jupyter and PyQT based applications.
  • Contribute to some of the latest nanotechnology research by adding new capabilities to model and simulate nanomanufacturing processes.
  • Apply machine learning models to add capabilities to existing data-based applications.
  • Contribute to project infrastructure development to help us create a sustainable open source environment for future nanomanufacturing students, researchers and developers.

Preferred experience

Relevant (but not required) background:

  • Experience working with Python and Python unit testing frameworks such as pytest.
  • Experience working with Python PyQt applications.
  • Experience with web application and API development.
  • Experience contributing to open source software projects.
  • Basic Linux command line, bash scripting SSH.
  • Experience using Git version control in a variety of contexts such as GitHub, command line, desktop and VSCode.
  • Experience using machine learning models and frameworks such as TensorFlow.
  • Experiences using Amazon Web Services (AWS) such as RDS and EC2.

Expected hours and compensation: Applicants are expected to work 5–10 hours per week and will earn $12.50/hour.
