Density Currents

Visualization of large-scale three-dimensional density currents responsible for transporting sediment into deep oceans that, over geological timescales, form offshore oil reservoirs. Over 1TB of raw data and 18TB of processed data from simulations by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Marcelo Garcia and Mariano Cantero and University of Florida’s S. Balachandar was volume rendered by custom visualization rendering software. Simulations model the collapse of heavy fluid in a lighter fluid for both cylindrical and horizontal plane configurations. Previously, the research team was unable to successfully volume visualize the entire domain of the simulation using available off-the-shelf software.
