NCSA launches new responsive website

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) has relaunched its website using the latest responsive design techniques to ensure that the site’s content is optimized for every screen, from desktop to tablet to smartphone.

Because of the rapid rise in the number of people using tablets and smartphones to browse the web, Mashable dubbed 2013 the Year of Responsive Web Design, writing that, “For publishers, it offers the simplest way to reach readers across multiple devices. For users, it ensures a great experience on every screen.”

NCSA’s updated site features news, events, science highlights, and organizational content, all available regardless of screen size and without requiring a separate mobile app. When the site is viewed from a smartphone or tablet, design elements and content automatically resize and shift, so the highest priority information is always front and center.

“Given NCSA’s history as the creator of the Mosaic browser and HTTPD and Telnet and Apache, it’s important to us to stay at the forefront of web development,” said NCSA deputy executive director John Melchi. “In the past few years, we’ve released a mobile game, used augmented reality in our Access magazine, and now we have an updated website that responds to the need to stay connected and informed from any screen.”
