NCSA wins two HPCWire Editors’ Choice Awards in AI and Automotive

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign won Best Use of Artificial Intelligence and Best Use of HPC in Automotive in the annual HPCwire Editors’ Choice Awards, at the 2018 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC18), in Dallas, Texas.

SC18 attendees are invited to join NCSA in booth #3635 to celebrate throughout SC18, including during our Blue Waters 5th Anniversary Happy Hour on Tuesday, from 4-6 pm.

“NCSA is honored to be recognized for our contributions in AI and HPC use in industry,” said William “Bill” Gropp, director of NCSA. “Congratulations to our research partners and thank you to HPCwire for this recognition.”

Editors’ Choice Award — Best Use of Artificial Intelligence:

NCSA uses deep learning on Blue Waters, featuring Cray, AMD and NVIDIA technology, to enable real-time gravitational wave discovery and new physics.

Group: NCSA Gravity Group

“Scientists at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), located at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, have pioneered the use of GPU-accelerated deep learning for rapid detection and characterization of gravitational waves. This new approach will enable astronomers to study gravitational waves using minimal computational resources, reducing time to discovery and increasing the scientific reach of gravitational wave astrophysics.”

Editors’ Choice Award — Best Use of HPC in Automotive:

Rolls-Royce Corporation, LSTC, Cray, and the NCSA

Group: NCSA Industry

Rolls-Royce has an engineering problem that needs a large-scale software solution. Solving that problem, however, requires a multi-team effort: Illinois’ National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) delivers the scale courtesy of Blue Waters, its Cray® XC™ supercomputer; Livermore Software Technology Corporation (LSTC) provides the software, LS-DYNA; and Cray contributes additional expertise to help ensure the software setup is optimal for the machine. By working together, these four players are creating a wide-reaching solution that no single player could achieve alone. As the common denominator among these disparate groups, NCSA is helping to facilitate the collaboration.”
