Project Profile

The SMARTFARM Project endeavors to develop a precise system for measuring greenhouse gas emissions given off during the production of crops. This will hopefully lead to the development of new technology for managing bioenergy crops, improving yield, and reducing over fertilization.

Lead by Dr. Kaiyu Guan, a Blue Waters Associate Professor at NCSA, the SMARTFARM team has used the ecosys advanced agroecosystem model to simulate the energy, water, carbon, and nutrient fluxes that cycle throughout a farm.

In order to share their findings as widely as possible, the SMARTFARM team will make their data publicly available. What’s more, the team plans to create an online portal for growers and other scientists to access, and they also want to develop protocols for data processing and storage.
