Call for new NCSA Faculty Fellows

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is beginning the application process for the 2017-2018 Faculty Fellows program. This competitive fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for faculty and researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by offering seed funding for start-up collaborative research projects. Those interested should attend the two upcoming events for more information.

NCSA will host a kick-off meeting on Friday, January 20 from 12-1 p.m. in the NCSA building, room 1040, for any U of I faculty interested in becoming an NCSA Faculty Fellow. The meeting will give an overview of the application process and the program as a whole.

The following Friday, January 27, NCSA will host a second event, the Idea Acceleration Workshop from 10 a.m.-noon in the NCSA atrium, which is designed to bring together both current NCSA staff and potential faculty applicants from around campus to discuss proposal ideas and potential areas for research collaboration. Potential applicants are invited to submit a single slide to Amanda Lombardo at alombar@illinois.edu by noon on Thursday, January 26. These slides will be presented by the potential applicants at the workshop. They will also be made available on the NCSA Fellows wiki and distributed to NCSA staff. Slides should contain the appropriate contact details (e.g. email address), ideally a photo, and depending on how much information you are comfortable sharing, your project idea, and/or what skills/interests/resources you are interested in finding from NCSA. Example slides from last year’s Idea Acceleration Workshop may be found on the NCSA Fellows wiki.

Fellowship proposals can then be submitted by individuals or collaborative teams beginning January 27, 2017. Proposals for 2017-2018 are due Feb. 19, 2017. Decisions on funding are anticipated in April 2017. Learn more on how to apply.

Projects are encouraged that build on existing NCSA activities, including the center’s six thematic areas:

  • Bioinformatics and Health Sciences
  • Computing and Data Sciences
  • Culture and Society
  • Earth and Environment
  • Materials and Manufacturing
  • Physics and Astronomy

and major projects and programs, including:

Questions may be sent to Amanda Lombardo at alombar@illinois.edu.
