NCSA aims to reduce disruption caused by end of support for Mass Storage System

The National Science Foundation has decided not to continue support for the operation of NCSA’s Mass Storage System archive beyond Sept. 30, 2012. In an effort to reduce the disruption this will cause to the researchers we serve, NCSA has made some commitments to allow for a smoother transition over a longer time period.

For those who currently have access to MSS, NCSA will support read-only access to data from MSS as of 11:59 p.m. Sept. 30, 2012, through Sept. 30, 2013. Unfortunately, for those with allocations on MSS, though we tried to make arrangements to continue stand-alone allocations on MSS beyond Sept. 30, 2012, this will not be possible.

Researchers with Petascale Computing Resource (PRAC) allocations will have access to the Blue Waters archive when it becomes available. The current projection for availability of the Blue Waters archive is first quarter 2013. Data that you need as part of your projects on Blue Waters should be moved to that archive at that time. Instructions on how to move your data to the new NCSA/Blue Waters archive will be documented in the Blue Waters User Guide when that archive becomes available.
