NCSA at SC17: It’s Time to Change the World Again

It’s time to change the world again. That is the bold call-to-action that the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will share at SC17, the industry’s largest annual supercomputing conference November 12-17 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO.

“There’s been an explosion in the types of challenges facing the world that can be addressed through data and computing,” said William “Bill” Gropp, director and chief scientist of NCSA. “Today, the demand for these resources nationwide is greater than the supply. At SC17, NCSA is raising awareness for the world-changing discoveries that computing enables to advocate on behalf of the open science community for greater investments by the federal government that will not only change the world but will allow the U.S. to lead the world in computing and solutions.”

Attendees are invited to explore the world-changing research that creative scientists from across the nation are conducting in collaboration with NCSA, featured in NCSA’s booth (booth #1335) and at the 38 talks and workshops featuring NCSA experts. NCSA will also be hosting a number of in-booth events including a Happy Hour and a Coffee Hour. Attendees can RSVP for NCSA’s in-booth events here.

NCSA will be highlighting Milky Way Analogue Isolated Disk Galaxy (10:45–11:00 a.m.), Simulation and Visual Representation of Tropical Cyclone-Ocean Interactions (11:00–11:15 a.m.), and First Light in the Renaissance Simulation Visualization: Formation of the Very First Galaxies in the Universe (11:15–11:30 a.m.).

Student Cluster Competition

A team from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been invited to take place in the 16-team Student Cluster Competition! The Student Cluster Competition was developed in 2007 to immerse undergraduate and high school students in high performance computing. These student teams design and build small clusters with hardware and software vendor partners, learn designated scientific applications, apply optimization techniques for their chosen architectures, and compete in a non-stop, 48-hour challenge at the SC conference to complete a real-world scientific workload, while impressing conference attendees and interview judges with their HPC knowledge. For more information on this competition, visit the SC17 Student Cluster Competition webpage.

Parallel Computing Institute at the University of Illinois

Visit our closely-affiliated partners, the Parallel Computing Institute at the University of Illinois, at SC17 in booth #2037 where they will be showcasing student research projects and demos.

The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE), one of NCSA’s major projects, will also have a booth (#225) at SC17 where conference attendees are encouraged to stop by and learn about XSEDE-enabled projects, chat with XSEDE representatives, and see what types of collaborations XSEDE offers researchers. XSEDE’s collaboration booth also will feature two-half day events to encourage XSEDE meetups and project collaborations.
