NCSA is led by Director Thom Dunning, who also holds an endowed position as Distinguished Chair for Research Excellence in Chemistry and professor in the University of Illinois Department of Chemistry.
Supporting Dunning are executive director Danny Powell, deputy executive director John Melchi, and deputy director and chief technology officer Rob Pennington.
NCSA is organized into six primary units:

The @Scale mission is to be a world leader for enabling timely insight for challenging, important societal and scientific problems through understanding, provisioning, supporting and improving computational, analytical, storage and communication technologies, and their related services, at capabilities and complexities of notable scale in order that investigations and solutions previously beyond timely solution are attainable.

The Administration Directorate provides world-class in-house services to NCSA and manages the day-to-day operation of the center and its facilities.
Divisions within Administration include Facilities, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, and Public Affairs.

NCSA deploys and supports powerful, reliable computing, data, and networking resources that enable researchers to solve the most demanding science and engineering problems in a timely manner.
Divisions within ADS include Advanced User Support, Consulting, Information Resources, the National Petascale Computing Facility, Storage Environments and Technologies, Systems, Technology Management, Training and Documentation, and SEAS.

The Data team tackles the challenges of collecting, transporting, storing, managing, integrating and analyzing data in order for them to be accessible, searchable, and usable, yielding insights and innovation.

NCSA's Collaborative eScience Directorate works to reduce barriers to the use of cyberinfrastructure so more people in more fields of inquiry can take full advantage of powerful digital resources and services. This unit leads NCSA's participation in the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) and the University of Illinois Campus Cluster Program.
