Specifically created for the popular video platform TikTok, Not For You attempts to pop the social media bubble by making the “For You” page less addictive.
Not For You bypasses traditional tracking technologies by automatically playing various posts, thereby confusing the tracking algorithm. In doing so, Not For You presents videos, hashtags and users that the platform’s recommendation algorithms might not otherwise display.
Not For You encourages people to view and critique differing opinions and viewpoints. It’s designed to break down barriers and force users to recognize and reconsider the large social media platforms’ grip on what’s being consumed and discussed by the general public.
This “automated confusion system” was created by researcher and artist Ben Grosser, an Associate Professor of New Media at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the co-founder of the Critical Technology Studies Lab at NCSA.
