The University of Illinois student-run Engineering Open House (EOH) has been delighting visitors for more than a century. This long-running event is the largest student-run STEM fair in the country. NCSA has been hosting exhibits for EOH for a number of years, and the Center has used the opportunity to share the amazing research conducted by its interns and student researchers.
Adarsh Krishnan, a major in computer science and philosophy (minors in informatics and mathematics), was one of the students showing off his research project at the Students Pushing Innovation (SPIN) booth during the event. He’s working on a project called “Python package for Indian Language Transliteration.”
“Showcasing research at an event like Engineering Open House is incredibly useful for students as it’s a more relaxed environment where students can develop presentation skills by sharing their work with a larger community,” said Krishnan. “I also think it’s just a very satisfying experience to be able to explain your research to others who are genuinely interested in learning about your progress, and EOH is a great place to do that.”
SPIN students won two EOH awards this year: second place in Outstanding Undergraduate Research and second place in Forging the Future (Theme Award). CAII’s Visual Nutrition Application won third place in Outstanding Undergraduate Research.
There were a number of booths at NCSA, and you can find the full list with detailed descriptions in the EOH Visitor Guide. Our photographers were on hand to take some snaps of the event and captured the excitement of the day. You can find photos of the event below.
