Project Profile

Global agricultural systems face enormous challenges in the years to come. The Artificial Intelligence for Future Agricultural Resilience, Management, and Sustainability (AIFARMS) Institute was created to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to promote solutions to these problems.

Founded through a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, AIFARMS aims to serve as a nexus for multidisciplinary research teams that are using AI tools to improve efficiency and solve problems within agriculture.

Operating under the umbrella of the Center for Digital Agriculture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, AIFARMS is well-equipped for collaboration. Perhaps the best example is the resources provided through NCSA. NCSA is quickly becoming a major center of expertise in agriculture-related data analysis and machine-learning services, offering AIFARMS one of the most powerful and extensive supercomputing environments in the world.

Agricultural systems are the bedrock of human civilization, so problems and inefficiencies within these systems affect every person on the planet. AIFARMS endeavors to use the enormous resources offered by organizations like NCSA to ensure the future of food production.
